Some call it Live Action Role Playing, others call it Fantasy Reenactment or Full Contact Cosplaying, and many like to refer to it as a combat sport. We like to dabble in a little of all of it and we call it Brackish Bay.
Our Region is home to the oldest foam-based fighting game in the country which started right here in the DC Metro suburb’s in 1977. Many of us have participated in it over the years. We are a mish-mash of historical re-enactment and fantasy LARP, and a Combat Sport. We are primarily based in the medieval period or “pre-gunpowder” eras of human history, and we have units that span from the ancient Greeks up through the late 13th-14th century. There are no geographic restrictions, and many groups are based in fantasy genres as well.
Most gameplay involves pre-gunpowder style weapons. Sword and Shield, flails, javelins, even bow and arrow! Most games have a rule set, a moral code, and numerous tutorials on how to play, arm yourself, and create your own garb (clothes).
What if I’m not able to fight, or just not interested in fighting?
While fighting is a major component, it is certainly not the only activity! We have atmosphere! We also have Feasts, Camp-outs, Non-Fighting Events, Crafting Days, and Inter-Chapter Events.
The other half is what we call “Arts & Sciences”. Without it our events would fall flat. We are always trying to help each other improve our gear and assist new people. Whether it’s from The Loom, The Forge, or The Workbench, there are many avenues for anyone to participate! If you are not the crafty type, we have many members who are also merchants and have hand crafted wares to get you started in a hurry!
What is Brackish Bay?
Welcome Aboard! Brackish Bay is a group formed in Maryland consisting of old friends, bar flies, songbirds, crafters and general wanderers and explorers of all things wonderful and potentially dangerous. Mostly supervised… Mostly.
We focus its events in the southern counties of Maryland and Tidewater Virginia. We generally hold a nautical theme, but we welcome any units or fighters of whatever background they desire. Variety is the spice of life, after all. Check the events tab to see what events may be happening. All are welcome! Who knows, maybe you’ll start a crew of your own and be a member of The Fleet.
